Dr. Walter W. Leibrecht (1927-2007) was an esteemed educator and theologian. His experiences during World War II, being drafted into the military at 16, led him to pursue theology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the University of Heidelberg, and the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate in 1953. He held various academic positions, including roles at Columbia University, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Chicago.
Dr. Leibrecht saw a need for an educational environment that would prepare students for leadership roles in a global setting. To fulfill this vision, Leibrecht founded Schiller College in 1964 at the medieval castle of Ingersheim near Stuttgart, Germany. His aim was to create an institution that combined rigorous American academic standards with rich cultural experiences.
Leibrecht’s vision was to foster a truly international educational community, offering students the opportunity to study abroad and immerse themselves in different cultures, embodying his commitment to a global education long before globalization became a common term. This innovative approach to higher education remains a cornerstone of Schiller International University’s identity, preparing students personally and professionally for future leadership roles in an interconnected world.
