Can you tell us about your career path and your current position today?

After completing my studies, I followed a career path that blended my interests in political affairs, public service, and global security. Currently, I serve as a Program Officer in Integrity Risk Management at Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). My role involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating integrity risks related to economic lines of business, ensuring that Canada’s immigration system remains secure, fair, and transparent. Additionally, I've had enriching experiences such as interning at the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, which further solidified my passion for international diplomacy and governance.

What motivated you to follow this path?

My motivation to follow this path stems from my personal experiences growing up in Syria, where I witnessed the impact of conflict and instability firsthand. These experiences instilled in me a deep passion for contributing to security and humanitarian efforts, as well as advocating for social justice and inclusion. Moving to Canada, I found it to be a place of safety and opportunity, which fueled my desire to work in public service, particularly in areas that can make a positive impact on vulnerable populations.

What are some of the most challenging obstacles you face as a Program Officer at the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship department in Canada?

One of the most significant challenges I face is balancing the need for a secure immigration system with the humanitarian aspect of immigration. Canada has a strong reputation for welcoming refugees and immigrants, but there are constant challenges related to fraud prevention, assessing the legitimacy of applicants, and mitigating integrity risks. Navigating these complexities while ensuring that processes remain fair and efficient is a daily challenge.

How has your education at Schiller played a role in your life since graduation?

My education at Schiller was instrumental in shaping my global perspective and deepening my understanding of international diplomacy. The diverse and multicultural environment at Schiller allowed me to develop critical thinking and cross-cultural communication skills, which have been invaluable in my career in public service and diplomacy. The program also provided a solid theoretical foundation that I continue to draw upon in my current role when dealing with international migration and governance issues.

What do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your Schiller experience?

The most valuable aspect of my Schiller experience was the global network and international exposure I gained. Being in a classroom with students from all over the world, each with unique perspectives and experiences, greatly enriched my learning experience. This global network has continued to be a resource throughout my career, offering different perspectives on global issues and fostering valuable professional connections.

If you had to pick one, what is one skill you developed or honed at Schiller that you use every day?

The skill I developed and use daily is critical thinking. At Schiller, we were encouraged to analyze complex global issues from multiple perspectives and to think beyond the surface. In my current role, this ability to critically assess information, especially when managing integrity risks, is crucial.

Can you share some of your fondest memories from your time at Schiller International University?

One of my fondest memories is the collaborative environment that encouraged lively discussions and debates on global affairs. Being in Paris also provided a unique backdrop for learning about diplomacy in practice, with events and seminars happening all around the city. I also cherish the friendships I made with fellow students who, like me, were passionate about making a difference in the world.

What advice would you give to current students to help them make the most of their Schiller experience?

My advice to current students is to take full advantage of the diverse network around them. Engage with classmates, professors, and guest speakers as much as possible because this network can offer invaluable insights and opportunities down the road. Also, don’t be afraid to challenge your own perspectives— Schiller is the perfect environment for testing ideas and developing your worldview. Finally, keep an open mind, be adaptable, and never lose sight of your passion for making a positive impact globally.
