Can you share some of your fondest memories from your time at Schiller International University?
Joining Schiller International University was an exciting chapter of my life, marking my first time travelling outside of Africa. I was particularly drawn to the multicultural environment and the vibrant atmosphere of being located in Waterloo. Some of my fondest memories include the cultural days, where we celebrated diversity by dressing in traditional attire, preparing and sharing a variety of dishes from our respective countries, and enjoying dances that showcased our unique cultural traditions.
In addition to these memorable events, I had the honour of serving as the Editor of the Yearbook during my time at the Schiller Waterloo campus. As I graduated, I was deeply humbled to receive the 2000 John Eggert Award, an accolade given for outstanding contributions, which was truly a highlight of my academic journey.
How would you describe the spirit and culture of Schiller during your years on campus?
The spirit and culture of Schiller International University during my years on campus were defined by a deep sense of multiculturalism, camaraderie, and a strong commitment to personal and academic growth. The campus fostered an environment where students from diverse backgrounds came together, bringing their unique cultures, perspectives, and experiences. This melting pot of cultures created an atmosphere of inclusivity and respect, where differences were celebrated rather than simply tolerated.
The spirit was one of curiosity and openness, with students eager to learn from each other and exchange ideas. Events like the cultural days exemplified this, where we shared food, music, and traditions, fostering an appreciation for diversity. There was a strong emphasis on creating lasting connections, both professionally and personally, with a shared focus on global understanding and cross-cultural collaboration.
The enduring qualities of Schiller during my time there were a commitment to academic excellence, a global outlook, and a sense of community that encouraged mutual support and engagement. These qualities left a lasting impression, shaping not only my educational experience but also my personal growth.
Having held positions at Vision group, UMWA and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Deployment and we would like to know how has your education at Schiller played a role in your life since graduation?
As for the current generation of students at Schiller, I believe the enduring qualities of the education there—global outlook, cross-cultural communication, and academic rigor—continue to provide students with the tools they need to thrive in today’s interconnected world. These qualities equip students with the skills to navigate an increasingly globalized economy, making them well-prepared to take on leadership roles and to impact their communities positively, just as Schiller has impacted my own journey.
As one of our first Schiller Alumni Awards, what do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your Schiller experience and teachings?
As one of the first recipients of the Schiller Alumni Award, I consider the most valuable aspect of my Schiller experience to be the ability to engage with a diverse, multicultural community. Schiller’s emphasis on global perspectives and intercultural understanding has been transformative in both my personal and professional life. The exposure to people from different countries and backgrounds helped me develop a deep appreciation for diversity, which has been invaluable in my career, particularly in roles that require cross-cultural communication and international collaboration.
The teachings at Schiller encouraged critical thinking, independence, and a global outlook—qualities that have shaped my approach to leadership and decision-making. I learned to embrace complexity and to consider multiple viewpoints when addressing challenges, whether in the media, corporate communication, or energy sectors. These lessons continue to guide my work today and are central to my commitment to promoting inclusivity, collaboration, and sustainable growth in the organizations I serve.
In essence, the most valuable aspect of my Schiller experience lies in the foundation it provided for my global mindset and the lifelong skills of communication, adaptability, and leadership, which I continue to carry with me in every aspect of my career.
