Alumni Spotlight: Betty Encinales

From 2001 to 2005, Betty attended Schiller International University's London/Waterloo campus, where they pursued a BA in Business Administration and International Relations. Her decision to study at Schiller was driven by its international spirit—multiple campuses across global cities and a truly diverse student body. This global education perfectly matched her mindset, allowing her to study in London, Paris, and Madrid. Currently residing in London and working as a Global Talent Acquisition Partner at Newsweek Global, Betty reflects fondly on her enriching experiences at Schiller. The dynamic classroom interactions, meaningful connections with professors, and the enduring qualities she developed—resilience, resourcefulness, and a capacity for respectful cross-cultural dialogue—have profoundly shaped her career and personal growth. She encourages current students to fully engage with Schiller's uniquely multicultural community to maximize their academic journey and future careers.

Can you share some of your fondest memories from your time at Schiller International University?

Some of my fondest memories from Schiller are the friendships that felt like family—people from every corner of the world, all learning and growing together. I loved the thrill of switching campuses between London, Paris, and Madrid—it felt like living three lives in one degree! Late-night study sessions, cultural dinners, spontaneous weekend trips, and deep conversations with people who saw the world differently, that mix of adventure and connection is something I’ll never forget. Schiller shaped not just my education, but who I am today.

How would you describe the spirit and culture of Schiller during your years on campus?

The spirit of Schiller was global, inclusive, and full of life. It felt like the world in one classroom—everyone brought something different to the table, and that diversity made it exciting and inspiring. The culture was open-minded, adventurous, and full of curiosity. We learned as much from each other as we did from our courses—and we had a lot of fun doing it!

Are there any qualities of the Schiller education that you believe continue to benefit students today?

Definitely. Schiller’s emphasis on global thinking, cultural agility, and real-world experience continues to be incredibly relevant. The ability to adapt, communicate across cultures, and think beyond borders is more valuable than ever in today’s interconnected world. Schiller didn’t just teach theory—it prepared us to navigate global careers with confidence and curiosity.

Did someone from the staff or faculty leave an impression that you still carry until this day?

Yes—two incredible women from my time at Schiller left a lasting impression on me.

Sally Bennett, who is sadly no longer with us, became so much more than a faculty member. She was a mentor, a friend, and later even my manager. Sally touched my heart in so many ways—she taught me how to lead with purpose while still having fun, and her energy and warmth will stay with me forever.

Maria Bergmann is another inspiring woman who continues to be a dear friend. Her adventurous spirit, kindness, and unwavering support always made an impact. She reminded me to stay curious and open to life’s journey.

Both women shaped not just my student experience, but the person I am today.

Are you still in touch with some of your friend from your years as a student?

Absolutely! In fact, many of my closest friends today are people I met at Schiller. Sven Kerper, Jose Rodrigues, Gia Carbonelli—just to name a few—are still part of my inner circle. Even after two decades, that bond remains strong. Schiller gave me more than a degree; it gave me a lifelong support system of incredible people who continue to be a big part of my life.

How has your education at Schiller played a role in your life since graduation?

My education at Schiller was a true launchpad—it opened the door for further studies and gave me the confidence to embrace global opportunities. It taught me how to connect with people from different cultures, which has been invaluable both personally and professionally. Many of the connections I made during that time continue to enrich my career and my life to this day.

What do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your Schiller experience?

The most valuable aspect of my Schiller experience was the agile, international education. Being able to move between campuses in countries like England, France, Germany, and Spain gave me the chance to immerse myself in different cultures, pick up new languages, and adapt quickly to new environments—skills that have been incredibly useful throughout my global career.

Many of our students aim to start their own company or lead one eventually. As the Director of Becruit / Recruitment agency, what is something that helped you achieve this and could also help other students pursuing a similar goal?

The key to my success as the Director of Becruit has been a combination of preparation, education, and determination. Whether you're working for a company or starting your own, maintaining an agile mindset—constantly learning and adapting to the market—is crucial. Equally important is adopting a kind, supportive, and passionate approach to your work. This not only builds trust but opens doors for opportunities. Above all, believing in yourself is vital. When you take ownership of your responsibilities and stay committed to the hard work required, you can turn your dreams into tangible outcomes.

What advice would you give to current students to help them make the most of their Schiller experience?

My biggest piece of advice is to fully embrace the opportunity to move between campuses and immerse yourself in different cultures. Interact with people from diverse backgrounds, and if possible, learn a new language. These experiences will not only enrich your education but also build a strong network of connections that will support you throughout your career and personal life. The relationships you cultivate now can become invaluable resources in the future, both professionally and personally.
